I. Welcome Back from summer
Meetings are scheduled for every other Wednesday afternoon from 1-3 pm.
II. Discussion of Our First Thoughts
Over the summer everyone did readings on libraries. We discussed our first thoughts based on those readings.
a. What is “library”? It is a learning place; an academic, social, and resource area; a place to find solitude, quiet study, and privacy; has both collaborative and separate learning spaces; a place to get assistance and utilize the expertise of librarians; develop research skills; serve learning needs of students; teach the teacher; a place of scholarly values and institutional memory.
b. What will our library be in 2020? A virtual space in addition to physical space; wireless, patrons will use both electronic and hard materials; provide interaction with scholarly record, methodology of how to use with discipline differences; librarians may go to students; learning commons area to get help from definition of problem to presentation of solution; will serve both students and faculty needs; service ethic.
c. What will students need? Equipped group study space, preeminent learning space, faculty involvement, one-on-one teaching/learning, up-to-date materials including IT, classroom space for interconnections between courses & library, “lab” for conducting scholarly & creative research, access to online classes, and 24/7 services
III. Practical Issues
a. We discussed potential sites for library visits in New York, Washington, DC. More later.
b. We discussed effective ways to get the campus involved in this discussion, including focus groups, class distribution, surveys, etc.
c. Sara, Doug and Mary Beth will draft a list of questions for faculty focus groups.
IV. Other:
