1. Reports on Visits to Buff State and Geneseo, including pictures.
a. David shared pictures from the visits to Buff State, Geneseo and SUNY IT and we discussed them.
b. Buff State’s library is very inviting, accessible, and attractive. The building is an older building. The information commons included a circulation, reference, and interlibrary loan area. The help desk has proctors to answer technical questions. All proctors have bright colored shirts so they can be identified easily. At self-serve print stations, they have a card reader for billing purposes. The faculty instructional lab or research room wasn’t sectioned off in carrels. It had both Macs and PCs, scanners, and state of the art software. Their early initiative was to provide accessibility workstations for people with disabilities. They realized that they needed them in 24/7 room.
c. Geneseo has a large café and service area at the entrance. The service area was circulation and tech support. Geneseo also had bright colored shirts for tech support staff. There were 5 or 6 classrooms. The large instruction rooms had two drop down screens, good track lighting and wiring. The head of faculty development was with the library director and asst. director in one office. Head of technology services was located in the library. Faculty development center was nice and large. If classrooms weren’t scheduled, they were available for student use. The curriculum room was reorganized so the study tables were close to windows. They had a “crash” room and there were all different kinds of chairs and bean bag chairs. A lot of faculty and student art on the walls.
d. SUNY IT—low reference bookcases. Wood ends to the bookshelves. Very attractive w/ a lot of wood emphasis.
2. Discussion of main themes in responses of Focus groups and faculty surveys distributed at our last meeting. (Please read through the handouts before our meeting)
a. There were 38 responses from faculty members and 226 from students to the on-line survey. Handed out copies of the student survey results.
b. We will try to focus on the themes from the responses as we have been charged with drafting the vision. Our vision can build on what we have heard, but needs to help us move the campus forward. We are not limited in our vision by what people said but we should take some clues from it.
3. Any updates on focus groups since our last meeting?
a. Send Darlene the notes from the focus groups.
4. Dates: Retreat and spring meetings. (If you have not responded to Darlene, please bring your calendars)
a. The retreat will be held on January 17th starting at 8:30 a.m. and finish w/ lunch. We will be done by 1 p.m. We will send a notice of the location. Please read all of the handouts prior to the retreat. We will discuss and analyze the survey results and put together a draft vision statement. Then we may have a subgroup work on refining it. We will forward our vision statement to the campus for further discussion. We may do a presentation to the FA, Schools Chairs’ meetings, SA, and get feedback for refinements. Then we will present it to the President and Campus Concept Committee. The chart from UT distributed last time had easily understood mission and guiding principles. We might set up our vision statement with our values and the mission of the library then give examples of what we might implement to illustrate our goals.
b. We will compile the available time responses and set up our meetings for next semester.
