Committee on Intellectual Integrity
Minutes of November 12, 2008

Present: Bozak, Cox, LeBlanc, Evaneski, Kay, Murphy, Pretzat

Pilot Project discussion:

  • Information to collect on faculty volunteers:
    • name, course number and section
    • core v. elective v. gen ed
    • we can get capacities later, to look at small v. large class size
  • Boilerplate text for the syllabus of faculty volunteers
    • that Turnitin will be used in the class
    • that students will need to use Angel to access the Turnitin submission
    • that students will have Turnitin availabie to them for checking drafts
    • there should be a pointer to "what is plagiarism" and the campus policy
    • that faculty will have the originality reports available should they become suspicious about a paper
    • where to go for assistance - online at Turnitin, our site and their instructor
  • Note to faculty - we are not into being "plagiarism police" and we don't expect that their use of this tool is simply a helpful "gotchya" device
  • Where else is there assistance for students? OLS? Writing Center? COMPASS and the Laker are additional sources that might help assist students regarding this template. The Writing Center is of particular concern - very much understaffed.
  • Breakout training
    • how to use the product (angel and Turnitin)
    • how to use it educationally (interpreting originality reports)
    • assessment efforts
    • Encourage faculty to devote 1/2 class or so on plagiarism and the use of Turnitin
  • Bozak will craft boilerplate language and circulate it for improvement

Department guidelines for honor codes

  • Bozak will do some research on the existance of these at other institutions and will distribute info for further discussion.

Respectfully submitted,

-David Bozak
