Committee on Intellectual Integrity
Minutes of 4-18-06
Present: Michael Ameigh, Donald Masterson, Michael Murphy, Barbara Shaffer
Discussion continued on the topic of plagiarism in an attempt to define it. It was also pointed out that internationally there are different conventions, different policies and laws regarding intellectual integrity, which can create confusion and inhibit enforcement of policies on campus. Discussion will continue.
The Committee also discussed the notion of 'institutional responsibility' regarding intellectual integrity. What is the 'institution' in this context?
The Committee heard an informal report of highlights on the conference by those who attended the recent Academic Integrity conference in Albany co-sponsored by SUNY and the SUNY Faculty Senate.
Projects under consideration:
Survey of faculty and students planned for fall semester
Education: strategies for preventing plagiarism through dissemination of information
Guidelines for describing succinctly the various types of intellectual integrity and sanctions for violating those guidelines.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 2 at 3:45PM in 711 Culkin (backup is 4PM in 702 Culkin)
