Minutes for February 17, 2010

General Education Planning:

Dean Rhonda Mandel of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Tania Ramalho, Curriculum and Instruction, are leading the General Education Taskforce charged with developing a report to the campus on changes in general education practices across the nation.

The Council compared data on general education enrollments in Fall 2008, Spring 2009, and Fall 2009 and discussed ways to assure adequate capacity while also providing a degree of flexibility for incoming students.

Part-time Student Degree Initiatives:

The Council discussed progress being made on the development of a number of program initiatives that provide degree opportunities specifically designed for part-time students. 

New Campus Video:

Jerry Oberst, Associate Director of Admissions, updated the Council on a new campus video to be produced over the next several weeks.  A number of suggestions were made to assure the video is comprehensive in its coverage of academic programs and initiatives.  Deans will make recommendations of possible participants.

Announcements:

Rameen announced that Greg Mortenson, author of ‘Three Cups of Tea,’ will address the campus community in a series of events scheduled for October 28th.

Linda Rae Markert announced that an exam to be given to students as part of the Scientific and Quantitative Literacy (SQL) initiative is moving through the Institutional Review Board (IRB) review process.
