Adjunct salary rate increase: The Provost announced that beginning in the fall 2008 semester the base salary rate for adjuncts teaching a three-hour course will increase to $2,604.
Impact of Changing Technology on Higher Education: The Council began a discussion of how communication technology trends are affecting the creation, dissemination, validation, and use of knowledge at colleges and universities. Among issues explored are implications for core campus activities; peer-reviewed academic publishing; financial implications; and how the campus might prepare for this fast-approaching future.
Student comments: Susan met with a group of students to discuss academic issues of particular interest to them. Suggestions included better communication on the social networking website FaceBook where SUNY Oswego students spend much of their online time. Students applauded living-learning groups available to first-year students and recommended such options be more effectively promoted to students in future. Learning communities and dorms like Hart and Johnson Halls were described as particularly beneficial for bonding with other students, getting to know members of the campus community, and becoming full participants in the life of the college. Susan encouraged deans to have student advisory boards.
College Hour: Associate Provost Rameen Mohammadi is working with faculty, students and the Registrar to develop an alternate time for College Hour beginning in the fall. Surveys have shown that 55 minutes, the original period of time allotted for College Hour programs, is not long enough for many programs. Rameen will present options for consideration by the campus community following spring break.
Transfer and Articulation: The Provost distributed a report prepared by Chris Hockey, Transfer Coordinator. The document describes efforts across SUNY to review and revise transfer practices. The Council will discuss the report in April.
Printing of Paper Course Bulletin: The Council discussed ways of being more green, including a suggestion that we not print full course bulletins since MyOswego, the Registrar’s online website, provides more current schedule information. We determined there is a need for more investigation of how this might impact students and faculty.
