Compass overview:
Kathy Evans, Associate Dean of Students and Director of the Student Advisement Center, presented an overview of Compass, the new student services center in the Campus Center. Participating in the presentation were Michelle Bandla, Director of the First-year Program; Paul Roodin, Director of Experience-based Education; and Chris Hockey, Director of Transfer Services.
The new center hosts a number of different services available to students in a single cluster of offices representing both Academic Affairs and Student Affairs. In addition to its on-site drop in facilities, COMPASS is in the process of initiating a number of on-line services to provide students with ‘backpack to briefcase’ mentoring and advisement. Graduation learning outcomes:
The Council discussed progress being made in defining and tracking learning outcomes. The Provost summarized a number of efforts to build awareness and generate feedback from the campus community on a goal set by the Council in fall 2007 to begin working with Faculty Assembly to approve graduation outcomes and map them across the curriculum.
The Council discussed efforts underway by the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) to define what comprises an undergraduate degree in the context of a liberal education. That effort is part of AAC&U’s Liberal Education and America’s Promise (LEAP) project. Deans will continue to solicit feedback from departments on the issue of learning outcomes.
