Searches for 2006-2007: The Council discussed a list of proposed faculty searches in preparation for a presentation by the Provost and deans to the Priorities and Planning Council. The Council also reviewed a draft of a template designed to assist search committees in preparing advertisements and postings of available positions. Specific language was added to the Request-to-Fill-Position form to clarify search committee responsibilities in pursuing institutional goals toward diversifying the faculty and enhancing international perspectives in the curriculum. Both forms are now available for download from the Provost's Website at: http://www.oswego.edu/administration/provost/forms.html
Dual Career Searches The Council discussed an initiative recently begun by colleges and universities in the Central New York region to establish a process for disseminating academic job information to search candidates that may be of interest to spouses/partners likely to relocate with new hires. More than twenty colleges and universities in the region are participating in this Higher Education Relocation Consortium (HERC), including SUNY Oswego. A website will be announced soon. Resumes can be shared via a listserv.
Funding Hospitality related to Academic Business The Council discussed the need to fund certain functions related to searches and other academic business for which regular state account funds cannot be applied, according to SUNY Policy. We will work on a draft policy to present to President's Council for consideration.
Goals for 06-07: The Council reviewed a list of 12 goals for Academic Affairs in 2006-2007 that were proposed by the Academic Affairs Council at its recent retreat. A number of suggestions were proposed to assist in narrowing these down. The Provost will distribute a revision to AAC for a week of review to be followed by a call for academic departments to provide additional feedback.
Retention The Provost announced she is prepared to provide stipends to departments for faculty involved in working to improve freshman retention. Deans were asked to begin thinking about developing a structure for distributing the stipends.
Symposium on Teaching and Learning Associate Provost Rhonda Mandel requested that deans encourage more faculty participation in the Symposium on Teaching and Learning, scheduled for September 29th.
