Announcements: -The software engineering program has been approved by the SUNY Board of Trustees as a Master Plan Amendment and is currently under review by the New York State Department of Education.
-The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has awarded $425,000 to SUNY to create professional masters degree programs. Oswego participated in the proposal development process and is expected to receive a portion of the grant for program development.
Student travel funding: Susan and Dean of Graduate Studies David King are in discussions with members of the Scholarly and Creative Activity Committee (SCAC) regarding possible ways to streamline procedures for requesting student travel grants. Currently several campus offices provide such support; students must make requests to each one individually. A number of options for making the process more efficient are under consideration.
International Education: The Council discussed recommendations presented by the International Advisory Group (IAG) regarding the future of International Education. The IAG is the successor to the International Education Advisory Committee which has been reorganized into sub-groups, each with a different charge. Each sub-group offered a series of recommendations related to its mission. The Council expressed support for the recommendations and will meet with Walter Opello and Joshua McKeown of that office to continue this discussion.
Electronic recruitment portal: The Council received an overview of InterviewExchange, a recruitment tool for housing, organizing and reviewing application materials submitted by candidates for open positions. Marta Santiago, Director of Human Resources, discussed the purpose of the system and its advantages over current practice in position searches. A training session is scheduled for July 13th.
Special appreciation: This is the final Provost’s Council meeting for Lanny Karns. Lanny is stepping down as dean of the School of Business on June 30th. Susan expressed deep appreciation and gratitude on behalf of the College for Lanny’s many years of service to the Council and the College and wished him well as he returns to the faculty next year. An interim dean will be announced shortly.
