Metro Center: The Council continued its discussion of potential program offerings for the new SUNY Oswego Metro Center in downtown Syracuse. The facility is tentatively scheduled to begin operation during the coming academic year. A number of possibilities are under consideration. Planning is underway to conduct searches for a director and to fill a marketing position that will focus on building awareness of Metro Center programs and events.
Graduate Enrollment: David King, Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, reviewed the status of graduate studies at the college. A variety of data related to enrollment, recruitment, retention, and other issues was presented. Dean King pointed out that while some programs have broad appeal and attract highly qualified students, others have untapped potential. The Graduate Office is considering ways to enhance the pool of applicants for graduate programs generally.
Class sizes: The Council continued its discussion of ways to increase the number of lower-division class sections with 19 or fewer students. Efforts underway in the School of Education to meet that objective for the fall, 2007 semester were discussed. We have met the target for reducing the percentage of large enrollment classes. Susan asked the deans to provide feedback on additional costs that may be incurred in meeting this goal. Mehran will review the fall course offering to determine whether more seats will be needed to meet projected enrollment following implementation of the current plan.
Course Rotations: Susan requested reports from each unit on progress by academic departments in implementing two-year course rotations. This planning will help determine if its is possible to offer the full spectrum of programs semester to semester.
