Provost's Council
Minutes for March 14, 2007

Present: Susan Coultrap-McQuin, presiding; Michael Ameigh, recording. David Clendinning, Linda Rae Markert, Lanny Karns, Rhonda Mandel, Rameen Mohammadi, Yvonne Petrella.

Contracts:
The Council discussed ways to better educate faculty and staff regarding appropriate procedures for entering into contracts on behalf of the University. Mike Ameigh will research any existing procedures and policy statements.

Annual reports: The annual report format for 2006-2007 will be similar to last year.  Unit reports are due to the Provost’s Office by June 1st.   Faculty are reminded to input their annual activity to the online system by April 20th for discretionary salary increase (DSI) consideration in the fall.

Student Opinion Survey: The deans will continue to work with department chairs and their faculty to discuss key data from the Student Opinion Survey (SOS).

Economic Impact Statement: The College has published a brochure describing the significant impact of the University on the regional economy.  The brochure will be distributed widely on campus and throughout the community.

SOE diversity reading initiative: The School of Education has begun a reading initiative based on the book Faculty Diversity: Problems and Solutions by JoAnn Moody.  Two ‘brown bag lunch’ discussions are planned for March 26th and April 16th in Hewitt Union.

Festa Fellowships: Nominations are requested for fellowships up to $10,000 for SUNY Oswego graduate students. Faculty mentors are needed as well.

Graduate Initiative: SUNY Oswego is participating in a system-wide request for funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to help develop professional masters degree programs.  We discussed progress on this initiative led by David King.

Faculty flexibility: SUNY Oswego will apply for funding from The Sloan National Initiative on Workplace Flexibility to explore ways to enhance professional flexibility for faculty and staff.

Research grant funding: The Council discussed the need for faculty grant proposals to include requests for full salary reimbursement for that portion of time spent on grant activities.  Proposals that request funding for adjunct replacements at the base rate are underestimating the true expense of assigned time and passing up additional indirect expense reimbursement needed to help support their projects.  Written guidelines will be developed.

Two-year schedules for Program Planning:

The deans will continue to work with department chairs and interdisciplinary programs to develop two-year course offering cycles in order to insure seats are available for all programs on a predictable and reliable schedule.
