Provost's Council
Minutes for October 25, 2006

Present: Susan Coultrap-McQuin (presiding), Michael Ameigh (recording). Mary Beth Bell, Rhonda Mandel, David Bozak (for Sara Varhus), Lanny Karns, Suzanne Weber (for Linda Rae Markert).

Announcements:

Susan said she would like to attend a chair meeting in each school beginning in mid-November.  She thanked departments for sending their minutes and indicated they are very helpful in keeping her informed of issues being discussed by faculty. She hopes to meet with departments again in spring semester.

Susan thanked everyone who assisted with the Campus Opening last week.  She expressed her satisfaction that when Swetman Hall reopens next year the campus will have realized its dream of wedding campus life and academic life in common facilities for the first time.

Rhonda announced that tickets to see Tracy Kidder, author of the Oswego Reading Initiative (ORI) reading selection for summer 2006, Mountains Beyond Mountains, have been sold out for Monday night.  She also announced the reading selection for summer 2007 has been chosen.  It is Bombingham, by Anthony Grooms.

Online faculty activities report:

The Council agreed that the online activities reporting system for faculty is ready to open.  Susan asked that any related  issues that may come forward be brought to her attention.

Class sizes:

Susan handed out a chart categorizing individual classes being presented during the current semester by actual enrollment.  The chart also showed proposed class capacities for Fall 2007.  The Council discussed ways the proposal might be implemented.  Susan said this issue will be back on the agenda for discussion on November 22nd.

Intellectual Integrity Guidelines:

The Council discussed a set of guidelines being developed by the Committee on Intellectual Integrity (CII) to assist faculty deal with cases of academic dishonesty.  The Provost requested the guidelines be shared with department chairs for their feedback.  She thanked the committee for its work on this document.

Campus Academic Research Center:

Susan handed out a draft document outlining issues to be considered in the development of an academic research center.  A number of revisions and additions were suggested.  She indicated a revision would be distributed to the Council soon for discussion with department chairs.
