Minutes for September 7, 2005

Present: Susan Coultrap-McQuin (presiding), Michael Ameigh (recording), Mary Beth Bell, Lanny Karns, David King, Rhonda Mandel, Linda Rae Markert, Yvonne Petrella, Sara Varhus.

Work/Life Issues:

The Council discussed a variety of issues related to the process of attracting and retaining faculty and staff at Oswego.  Susan indicated she will draft a summary of the discussion for future consideration.

Tenure and Promotion Workshop:

A workshop for faculty seeking promotion or tenure will be held on Thursday, September 22nd.  The Council discussed a variety of issues to be addressed in the session.  Each of the deans and the Director of the Library will address the workshop briefly regarding existing policy and expectations that apply to reviews in their areas.  Faculty who recently underwent tenure and promotion reviews will present and discuss their dossiers submitted as part of that process.

Announcements:

The Provost asked the deans if they knew of any groups or individual faculty who may have reached out to those affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Planning for WinterSession 2006 is underway.  This year, course offering literature will be jointly published by the Office of Continuing Education and the Office of International Education

The library is hosting a provocative exhibit about intellectual freedom sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union and a display for Constitution Day.  Also in the library are copies of the current reading selection for the Oswego Reading Initiative, "The Speed of Dark" by Elizabeth Moon. 

Penfield Library announced the final date for submitting recently published scholarly and creative works for display in the library is October 30th.

A reminder to encourage faculty to attend the Oswego Symposium on Learning and Teaching. Mary Huber of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching will do a presentation.  The symposium will begin at 3:30 in the Hewitt Ballroom.
