Minutes for August 16, 2005

Present: Susan Coultrap-McQuin (presiding), Michael Ameigh (recording), Mary Beth Bell, Lanny Karns, Rhonda Mandel, Linda Rae Markert, Yvonne Petrella, Sara Varhus.

Opening announcements:

Opening breakfast for the Fall 2005 term will be on Thursday, 25th in the Ballroom, Hewitt Union.

Academic Affairs Council Retreat:

The Provost announced that the primary purpose of the retreat is to present ideas that will help create division-wide goals for the 2005-2006 academic year. A review of goals and accomplishments for 2004-2005 will precede the brainstorm session.

Budget:

Various issues were discussed including temporary service expenditures and annual budget reports.

 SCAC grants:

The Provost indicated she would like to move funds for faculty grants to departments to which awardees are assigned.  She discussed an increase in funding for faculty grants and support for two rounds per year of the faculty grants as was done in the past.  Relative merits of each approach were discussed.

'Earmark' Proposal:

The multi-million dollar federal grant to develop teaching and training modules related to energy issues remains a possibility. Cayuga Community College and Morrisville are collaborators.  A delegation is being assembled to travel to Cayuga on September 14th to work on related curriculum issues.

Closing Announcements:

Deans Sara Varhus, College of Arts and Sciences, and Linda Rae Markert, School of Education, and Associate Provost Rhonda Mandel presented on the Catalyst Project at the ILP (Integrative Learning Project) Summer Institute in Palo Alto, California.

A conference on integrative learning sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) will be held on September 16th on campus. Faculty are urged to participate.  Contact Bill Bosch, CELT director, for more information.

"Beat the Deans" event will be Wednesday afternoon, August 24th. Run, bike, walk or just come by for a bit of socializing with new and returning colleagues and friends.  Wine and beer will be available.
