Provost's Council
Minutes for May 3, 2006

Attending: Susan Coultrap-McQuin (presiding); Michael Ameigh (recording). Mary Beth Bell, David King, Lanny Karns, Rhonda Mandel, Linda Rae Markert, Yvonne Petrella, Sara Varhus.

Announcements and updates:

  • The Council described a number of initiatives and developments underway in Academic Affairs for possible inclusion in President Stanley's presentation to the Faculty on Monday, May 8th.
  • Associate Provost Rhonda Mandel announced the College is working with Onondaga Community College to write grants for collaborative programs in the Arts in response to a recent call for proposals by New York State.
  • Dean of Graduate Studies and Research David King presented the latest iteration of draft brochures on graduate program opportunities at Oswego.  Deans will be asked to review the brochure and provide feedback.

Community Relations:

The Council discussed ways to encourage relationship building between the campus and the Oswego community.  The Office of Student Affairs is working on collaboration between students and community members.  It was noted that many SUNY Oswego faculty, staff and students serve in their communities and are active members of non-profit organizations that benefit the community as a whole. A number of suggestions for new partnerships were offered.  This discussion will continue at President's Council and in Provost's Council.

Two-year Rolling Course Schedules:

The Provost requested updates from deans regarding progress made toward the establishment of two-year rolling course schedules in all programs to assist student program planning.  It was reported that a number of departments and programs currently have such plans in place. We need to ensure that Honors, interdisciplinary programs and general education plans are also in place.

Facilities Use Policy:

The Council discussed a draft policy (handout) on the use of campus facilities.  Suggestions were made for additions and revisions. There was consensus that Academic Affairs should have a voice in establishing priorities.  Schedule 25, a web-based room scheduling software program recently purchased by the campus, is expected to address some issues related to room scheduling. This program will be used beginning fall semester.
