Provost's Council
Minutes for November 30, 2005

Attending: Susan Coultrap-McQuin, presiding; Michael Ameigh, recording. Lanny Karns, Mary Loe for Mary Beth Bell, Rhonda Mandel, Yvonne Petrella, Suzanne Weber for Linda Rae Markert, Sara Varhus.

Disability Services:

Kathy Evans, Associate Dean of Students and Director of the Student Advisement Center, and Starr Knapp, Director of the Office of Disability Services, addressed the Council on a variety of issues related to services for students with disabilities.  They requested assistance in identifying ways to broaden awareness of policies and procedures in order to better serve students. The number of requests for services by qualified students has increased significantly over the past few years, a trend that is expected to continue.  We need everyone's cooperation.

Chairpersons Workshop Agenda:

The Council discussed a variety of discussion topics for inclusion on the agenda for the chairperson's workshop scheduled for January.  The session will focus on assisting adjuncts and other part-time faculty. A variety of ideas were presented.  The agenda is expected to be finalized in the days ahead.  Robert Cole has been extremely helpful in planning the event.

Collaboration in hiring:

Susan described a meeting she attended recently involving about fifteen area colleges and universities that focused on possible ways institutions of higher education might assist partners of candidates for faculty and staff positions in finding employment opportunities in the region.  She said there is strong support for working collaboratively to identify and share professional employment opportunities with partners who might follow candidates to the region.  The Council came up with a variety of ideas that might be pursued in this regard.  More joint meetings are planned for the future.

Next Week:

President Stanley will address the Council at its next meeting on December 7.

A future session will include a presentation from the Admissions staff on what they have learned while meeting with prospective students across New York State.
