Provost's Council
Minutes for January 18, 2006

Present: Susan Coultrap-McQuin, presiding; Michael Ameigh, recording; Yvonne Petrella, David King, Linda Rae Markert, Mary Beth Bell, Lanny Karns, Rhonda Mandel, Sara Varhus.

Candidate Information:

We will soon have a list of websites for candidate packets assisting partners of newly hired faculty and staff who may be seeking employment opportunities in the region. A student worker has been hired to work with the Art Department to develop a brochure and website on multicultural and international dimensions of an Oswego education.

New Spaces:

We discussed policies regarding placing posters and other printed materials on walls or windows in newly renovated facilities. The renovation of classroom and departmental spaces has incorporated design elements that rely on the free flow of light through interior work spaces.

Joint Chairs meeting with other institutions:

The Office of Human Resources has suggested a joint chairs' meeting involving department chairpersons from several SUNY campuses to share information and consult on policy issues.  Linda Rae Markert will help plan the event with HR director Marta Santiago and report back to the Council.

Student Opinion Survey:

The SUNY Student Opinion Survey will be administered on campus during the spring semester. We discussed some possible groups to survey and potential questions to add.  Mehran will follow up with deans and others.

Draft Policy on two graduate degrees simultaneously:

Dean of Graduate Studies and Research David King presented a draft of a policy that addresses requests by graduate students to receive two degrees simultaneously; the practice is allowed in SUNY.  Following discussion, the Provost asked Dean King to work with the Graduate Council to develop a policy recommendation for Faculty Assembly and report back to the Council later in the semester.

Chair's Retreat:

A retreat for department chairs and deans will be held Friday, January 20th, at Fairway Manor in Fulton.  Preparatory reading materials have been distributed to attendees.
