Provost's Council
Minutes for June 15, 2005

Present: Susan Coultrap-McQuin (presiding), Michael Ameigh (recording), Mary Beth Bell, Lanny Karns, Rhonda Mandel, Linda Rae Markert, Sara Varhus.

1) Announcements:

-This Friday will be the last time to spend funds from the 2004-2005 regular state accounts.  The last two weeks of June will be required to reconcile with no further activity posted.  Income Fund Reimbursable (IFR) accounts are not subject to the end of the year sunset and so can be used for procurement as long as there are funds in those accounts.

-New faculty computers: please identify those who qualify so that we can order their requested computers as soon as possible.

2) Planning Calendars: A retreat with Academic Affairs Council is being planned for Wednesday, August 17th, to review the year-end report and talk about goals for the 05-06 academic year. Unit goals are due September 30th.

3) Budget Insights: (Handouts of allocations for 05-06 to individual units) A variety of budget issues was discussed with a focus on improving practices and procedures.

4) Dates for next year: Susan: we would like to present a tenure and promotion workshop in the Fall semester and each year subsequently. Another workshop for chairs is tentatively planned for January.

5) Annual Report Format: A format for the annual report from units was distributed and considered for modifications.

6) School of Business computer initiative: Lanny: The School of Business is in the midst of a four year plan to make laptops a requirement of all our students.  In all orientation sessions we are telling parents this is coming, that we will be requiring it, most likely in the 06-07.  Now we are implementing required laptops in introductory accounting courses (sophomores). By requiring the laptop, it qualifies for financial aid.

7) Other business: the Provost has ordered the text,"Diversifying the Faculty," for all members of the Provost's Council.  She hopes to have a discussion about the strategies outlined in this book later this summer.
