Minutes for May 4, 2005

Announcements:

- The hybrid course pilot committee is being formed: A meeting will be held shortly.

- Request for participation and first meeting on "library visioning" committee is being distributed today.

Technology planning process discussion, continued (with revised draft handout):

The Council discussed specific issues to be addressed in a divisional technology plan.  Relevant components of the technology plan include computers, software, networking, databases, training, and support.  It was recommended that a number of campus technology groups and faculty with specific technology responsibilities in their departments be consulted in the course of developing the final plan, and that a plan for faculty computer replacement be included. A third draft including the need to develop a clear vision will follow.

Report from Scholarly and Creative Activity Planning Groups - Tom Darvill

Tom highlighted a number of issues that have come up in discussions related to student scholarly and creative work; faculty scholarly and creative work; the potential role of a director of research, scholarly and creative activity.  Recurring issues include a need for more flexibility in funding student and faculty travel; integrating such activity more coherently into faculty workload; more effective communication regarding the role of research and scholarly activity in evaluations of faculty performance.

SUNY Budget guidelines:

SUNY has posted a document regarding eligibility and compensation limits for summer session appointment and compensation for employees of the campus, other SUNY campuses and the SUNY Research Foundation.  This was distributed to the Council.

Annual evaluation report summary:

Susan explained a format for deans' and directors' 2004-2005 personal performance summaries due June 12..

Online faculty activity reporting system update:

Mehran announced that the first data collection phase of the online faculty activity reporting system pilot project ended on May 1, and that reports have been satisfactorily generated for several academic departments. She asked that the Council schedule a discussion on expanded implementation in the coming Fall 2005 semester.  The Provost indicated this will be placed on the agenda for an upcoming meeting.
