Provost's Council
Minutes for February 23, 2005

Present: Susan Coultrap-McQuin (presiding), Rolando Arroyo-Sucre, Mary Beth Bell, Tom Darvill, Lanny Karns, David King, Rhonda Mandel, Linda Rae Markert, Mehran Nojan, Yvonne Petrella, Walter Opello, Mary Schoeler, Sara Varhus.

1.  Presentation and discussion of Schedule 25/Resource25: Andy Westfall and Mary Schoeler discussed the advantages of our adopting Schedule 25.  This is a partnership of Academic Affairs, CTS and Campus Life.  The group asked questions and affirmed its importance.  Presentations to other groups will be made.  Implementation will be next year.

2.  Announcements and updates from the group:

a.  Mary announced that SCAP awards have been made.

b.  Walter announced about $30,000 in international travel for research or conference grants were awarded.

c.  Rolando mentioned special recruitment efforts for minority students.

d.  Yvonne mentioned new coding for summer distance learning courses to clarify for students the correct section.

e.  Mehran requested that if there is a policy in place regarding  faculty research, that policy should be forwarded to her office, as Institutional Research provides technical support to faculty research.

3.  International Baccalaureate Degree:  Susan distributed a handout on the IB degree and informed the group about the request to APC for policies in admitting students with the degree.

4.  College Hour:  David King reported on the task force recommendation that will go to the Faculty Assembly.  There was some discussion of implementation.

5.  First Year Program updates:  Michelle Bandla and Rhonda Mandel reported on current activities related to First Year Programs.  Currently we have Johnson Hall, First Year Advisement, and First Choice Courses (now capped at 19).  Every entering student has a small course linked to 2 other general education courses.  Registration for First Choice is on-line and increasingly flexible for students.  We are piloting 5 Living-Learning Communities for students next fall;  these include a residence hall experience with the First Choice courses option.             

6.   Draft Goals for Graduate Studies:  David King distributed the revised draft of goals.  After some more minor changes, he will discuss with Grad Council and others.  Goals will be discussed with the Grad Dean candidates.
