Minutes for January 26, 2005

Workforce Development: Nancy Bellow, director of the Center for Business and Community Development located in Rich Hall, addressed the Council to discuss her work with Oswego County government, regional business organizations and corporate entities.  She asked the Council to consider the importance of workforce development in the region as part of the mission of the College.  She described several initiatives currently underway including a proposed a 12-county collaboration from Pennsylvania to Canada along the Upstate New York central corridor that includes Oswego and adjacent counties.  She suggested several useful books and other informative resources that address this issue.  She was invited to return to continue the discussion in the future.

News from around the Division of Academic Affairs:

Continuing Education - a new instructional designer has joined the staff; Greg Ketcham, Oswego graduate, will fill the role vacated by Pam Youngs-Maher earlier this year.

Penfield Library - a reception will be held on January 27th for non Art-faculty artists whose work will be on display in the library for several weeks.

Office of Learning Support - C-STEP has been working with Lego Robotics in its "Learning through Doing" initiative.  A campus competition is to be held for the first time in February.  Retention for the current students-at-risk was excellent this past semester; best in the U.S., according to Rolando Arroyo-Sucre, director.

School of Business, Center for Business and Community Development, and Office of International Education and Programs will sponsor a symposium on "Building Entrepreneurial Regions: A NAFTA (United States, Canada, Mexico) Perspective" at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, in the Center for Entrepreneurs, Room 118 of Rich Hall on campus.

School of Education - Dean's office has moved to Rich Hall temporarily.

Capital Campaign: College is two and a half years into a campaign with a $17 million goal.  David King clarified differences among funding streams on campus:

Capital Construction Fund - renovation and construction of the new Campus Center.  A match is required.

Dormitory Authority - funds renovation of residence halls.

Capital Campaign - College is attempting to raise matching funds for new construction, but other major goals include building endowment and other funds for current use in a variety of areas to enrich academic environment.  David indicated faculty and staff will be approached in the near future to participate in the campaign.

Announcements: There will be relief efforts for tsunami victims later in the semester; a collaboration with Student Affairs has begun with the goal of developing additional residential learning initiatives.
