Provost's Council
Minutes for January 12, 2005

Present: Susan Coultrap-McQuin (presiding), Michael Ameigh (recording), Mary Beth Bell, David Bozak (for Sara Varhus), Tom Darvill, Paloma Jalife (for Lanny Karns), David King, Rhonda Mandel, Linda Rae Markert, Mehran Nojan, Walter Opello, Yvonne Petrella, Mary Schoeler.

Meeting began at 9:30AM

The Provost discussed the half-day retreat on Jan.19 and requested that all attendees do "homework" in preparation for discussions. Susan thanked Mehran Nojan for creating the charts and assembling other information in preparation.

Announcements:

- A response to the request from SUNY about our assessment of General Education has been sent forward, a copy of which was distributed to Provost’s Council and Faculty Assembly earlier in the week.

- The Provost thanked all who worked on the scheduling of classroom assignments for the spring semester to spread classes over times of the day and days of the week.

- The Provost will continue bi-weekly meetings with deans and directors during the spring term and will meet with departments and other groups she has not yet met.

-When the spring term begins, we will work to get the campus involved in tsunami relief efforts.

Discussion:

- Tuition: The recent SUNY tuition increase proposal was discussed briefly.

- Space update: The Provost reviewed the latest information about space moves.  The office of the dean of Education will move to Rich Hall for the spring semester.  Other moves are in process. Detailed information about these moves and renovation scheduling is to be distributed to the campus soon.

- Graduate Office/ORSP space discussion (based on draft document distributed earlier): a variety of issues related to the needs of the graduate office and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs was discussed, including how these programs might best be housed and staffed.

- The Provost solicited a list of areas where special funding might be needed to accomplish goals of the University.  A number of suggestions were offered.  This issue will be revisited at future meetings.
