Memo from the Provost
Fire Alarm and Building Evacuation Procedures

Re:          Fire Alarm and Building Evacuation Procedures

At the start of a new academic year I want to remind everyone of the obligation to comply with our official building evacuation policies and procedures.  Evacuation may be necessary for many purposes, including a fire.  Please review with your students in each class their obligation to exit the building when a fire alarm sounds.

SUNY Oswego is required by local, state and federal regulations to have a fire evacuation program in place.  Evacuation drills are an important element of that plan.  Fire alarms will be set off in various campus buildings in the weeks ahead.

When an alarm sounds:

·         All persons, except for those designated as monitors, must leave the building immediately. The monitors should leave when their areas are clear.

·         All persons should close their doors when leaving the area.

·         All persons should stand 300 feet or more from the building and all entrances to that building.

·         All persons should remain outside or in another building until University Police indicate it is safe to re-enter.  No one may re-enter just because the alarm stops.

University Police and Facilities personnel will monitor the building to ensure that all persons evacuate in a timely manner.  Everyone is required to comply with official building evacuation procedures each time the fire alarm sounds.

I greatly appreciate your willingness to help assure the safety and security of our campus community. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this policy, please feel free to contact me (ph: 2290), Eric Foertch, Director of Environmental Health and Safety (ph: 3150) or Cindy Adam, Director, University Police (ph: 5555).  Thank you.
