The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (Research Foundation for SUNY) located at the State University of New York at Oswego (SUNY Oswego) invites applications for a WRVO/NCPR Jefferson County Reporter.  While this position is located on the campus of SUNY Oswego, this is a Research Foundation position not a New York State position.

Position Summary: The Jefferson County reporter will be based in and report on issues about Watertown and Jefferson County for both North Country Public Radio and The Research Foundation for SUNY/Oswego as the employer for WRVO Public Media, as part of a unique partnership. The Jefferson County reporter is responsible for coverage of news and production of human interest features in that region, which includes Ft. Drum, a major U.S. Army installation.

This position requires an enterprising, self-motivated reporter able to work on his, or her own, and with a team.

The reporter will produce on-air news stories for broadcast and on-line that fit in with the mission of both news departments to provide coverage of issues of regional importance. This reporter is jointly employed by both stations, supervised by editors at the two stations and files all stories for both stations. 

Duties and Responsibilities:                                                                               

  • Produce multiplatform content on a regular basis including -- broadcast news spots, broadcast feature stories and on-line stories
  • Pitch story ideas and be responsible for coverage of the reporter's assigned region.
  • Gather audio in the field, covering news events and conducting interviews
  • Contribute to overall news department's output including social media
  • Exhibit solid news judgment and the ability to perform without supervision, multitask, work under deadline pressure and problem solve
  • Participate in station and community-building events
  • Develop and demonstrate strong knowledge of current regional news issues

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum two years on-air public radio news experience
  • College degree - Journalism or related field preferred
  • Ability to record and gather high-quality audio in the field
  • Ability to use audio editing systems, such as Adobe Audition
  • Experience writing for broadcast and web
  • Ability to work various hours, including nights and weekends, depending on assignment
  • Driver's license and vehicle to drive to news coverage assignments within region
