Anticipated Vacancy
The Community Development Specialist (CDS), a member of the Residence Life and Housing management team, has the responsibility of supervising live-in residence hall staff as they implement departmental objectives, assess their effectiveness, identify areas in need of improvement and affect changes as appropriate. The primary focus of the position is the supervision of the staff and program in assigned residence halls/apartments with a combined population of approximately 1400 residents. This is a 12-month, live-on position with a work schedule intended to provide a presence during peak student contact hours, including evenings and weekends. The anticipated start date is June 6, 2013.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Direct supervision of professional staff in assigned residential communities, providing assistance to those staff members as they supervise their graduate and undergraduate staff;
- Structured and unstructured daytime, evening and weekend interaction with student staff and residents;
- Coordination of program implementation, judicial case management, and facilities and maintenance operations in their assigned community;
- Participation in departmental, divisional and College initiatives, committees and task forces.
Qualifications: Master's degree required (preferably in College Student Personnel or closely related field), plus a minimum of three years full-time post-master's experience in higher education/student affairs, including at least two years as a full-time live-in professional with direct residence hall supervision responsibilities. Preferred candidates will be able to demonstrate: the ability to work with diverse populations; effective supervisory, communication and organizational skills; understanding and appreciation of the need for regular interaction with students and staff; and a commitment to assisting students in achieving academic and personal success.
Compensation: Compensation includes a starting salary of $40,000, a furnished two-bedroom apartment and full New York State benefits. In order to encourage a significant presence in and interaction with supervised communities, a meal plan is provided for the Community Development Specialist and immediate family/qualifying domestic partners when classes are in session during the fall and spring semesters.
