Assistant/Associate Professor - Broadcasting/Mass Communication

Department of Communication Studies

The Department of Communication Studies at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor position.

Review Date: Review of applications will begin January 4, 2010, and will continue until the position is filled.

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Date of Appointment: August 2010

Description of Responsibilities:  Candidates will teach a variety of courses including broadcast sales, media economics, media management, programming, media law, and/or specialty courses in the area.  Other duties include Internship Coordinator and Director of the annual Lewis B. O’Donnell Media Summit, which are compensated by course reductions.  Active involvement in student advisement and departmental/college service is expected.  The successful candidate may also be required to demonstrate a practical and theoretical understanding of new media and strategies to help our students bridge the gap between traditional models of 'broadcasting' and emerging models of digital 'narrowcasting.'

Required Qualifications: Candidate must have a master’s degree in a related field, previous teaching experience and significant professional experience. Ability to incorporate issues of gender, race/ethnicity, and/or comparative global perspectives into course materials. 

Preferred Qualifications: A Ph.D. and previous college-level teaching experience.

Description of Department: Communication Studies is the largest department in the School of Communication, Media and the Arts, serving approximately 700 majors with 28 full and part-time faculty. The department offers majors in broadcasting, communication studies, public relations, and journalism. We are dedicated to excellence in undergraduate education in these four areas, and we are committed to providing students with relevant interdisciplinary experiences.  The department encourages experiential learning and facilitates an active year-round internship program.  We currently offer both a bachelor of arts and a minor in the field. Facilities include new digital production and news studios, new media production labs, high-definition editing suites, WRVO-FM (an NPR-affiliate station), WNYO (student-run FM radio station), and WTOP (student-run television station).
