Assistant Gallery Director
Art Department - Tyler Art Gallery

The Department of Art at the State University of New York at Oswego announces the opening of a part-time assistant gallery director.

Review Date: Review of applications will begin April 23, 2008 and will continue until the position is filled

Salary: Commensurate with rank and experience

Date of Appointment: July 2008

Description of Responsibilities:

  • Preparation and installation of exhibitions including unpacking, dismantling, and repacking of borrowed shows; arranging for shipping and crating of all incoming and outgoing artwork
  • Assist with maintaining the permanent collection including archiving and inventory.
  • Assist director with selection of exhibitions and exhibition schedule correlated to campus activities
  • Assist with community outreach as appropriate; assist with arrangements for visiting tours, artists, and scholars
  • Assist with introducing current exhibitions to faculty members and students; arrange security for non-gallery events taking place in the galleries
  • Write relevant sections of grants and reports
  • Assist with coordinating publicity with on campus outlets and off campus media.
  • Assist with writing and distributing press releases and images
  • Assist with supervision of opening receptions and special events

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, or visual art related field
  • Proven record of exhibition preparation and installation
  • Ability to promote students’ success in a multicultural and global community
  • Expertise with museum standard operations as well as experience with budgets, publicizing and organizing exhibitions and events.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Museum studies, or visual art related field

Description of Department:  Tyler Art Gallery presents a multitude of exhibitions in two gallery spaces, including outstanding traveling exhibitions, locally produced loan exhibitions and the best work of the students and faculty.  Tyler Art Gallery is a teaching gallery, regularly used by art classes as a means of providing an essential opportunity for students to have a direct encounter with original works of art of professional quality.  The gallery also serves as a training base for the museum studies program, giving students the opportunity to see and participate in the day-to-day workings of an art gallery.  The gallery also houses a permanent collection of European, African and American drawings, prints, paintings, ceramics and sculpture from the 18th century to the present.  The Grant Arnold Collection of Fine Prints contains over 500 prints by prominent American printmakers of the first half of the twentieth century.  The Tyler Art Gallery is part of the Art Department which is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, the Art Department has over 300 undergraduate majors in degree programs in Art, Art History and Graphic Design.  The Department also offers an MA degree in Art and Graphic Design as well as an MAT in Art Education.
