Please note:

1. Obtaining Log-ins

At the time of Oswego's comprehensive Web redesign (summer 2004), streamlining of the college's online content meant initial participationin the OmniUpdate Content Management System was by invitation. New and futureusers, and their permission levels, have beendetermined by set procedures and established best practices.

The chairperson, director or administrator in charge of your department, office or division must authorize all personnel and their individual OU permissions, must specify their roles and must approve any changes to those roles.

Account additions and changes are made through the OmniUpdate Accounts form (PDF, 76 KB) available from our Webmaster, Office of Public Affairs, 210 Culkin Hall, 312-3664.

The SUNY Oswego system administrator will set up and change accounts, based on proper documentation and approval from the relevant chairperson, director or administrator.

2. Scheduling Training

All SUNY Oswego personnel slated to use the OmniUpdate CMS must attend a training session before they will be allowed into the system. Training dates are are scheduled periodically through our Webmaster, Office of Public Affairs, 210 Culkin Hall, 312-3664.

The chairperson, director or administrator in charge of your department, office or division must authorize all changes to personnel with OU permissions and must specify their roles.

3. Quickstart Guide for the SUNY Oswego OmniUpdate CMS

Introduction
OmniUpdate is an easy-to-use Web content management system chosen by SUNY Oswego as a foundation of the college's site transformation.

OmniUpdate, known as OU Campus, an enterprise Web content management system designed specifically for higher education, doesn't require installation ofany software on your computer. It instead runs through your Internet browser. (Optimal system configuration is a Windows operating system running Internet Explorer 5.5 or newer browser. Other operating systems and browsers can be used, but you may experience decreased or limited functionality. A new universal editor, introduced in summer 2006,better supports both Mac and PCplatforms, including the Safari browser.)

Because OU Campus is browser-based**, you can edit Web pages on your computer and save them on the OmniUpdate staging server. The staging server is just that, a place where Web pages and other files are held (or staged) until they are approved and published to the live, or production, server, or rejected and sent back for revision.

**Since a great deal of new content, updates and changes will reside in your browser until you save the respective file to the staging server, we strongly recommend saving your working document on a regular time basis, such as every 10 to 15 minutes or after significant changes or additions.

The SUNY Oswego Web Publishing Process
The process of creating new Web pages or editing existing pages within the OmniUpdate system is straightforward.

Using your browser, you'll surf to a specific section front (such as About, Academics or News, for example) or page (such as /academics/colleges_and_departments/departments/music/index.html), or perhaps a URL within the training section.

Step 1: Logging In
Once there, you'll scroll to the bottom of the appropriate page and find the date stamp on the last text line of this page:

This takes you to the OU login screen.

Once in the OU system, you will be able to perform a wide variety of content creating and editing functions, depending on your permission level.

As you create new pages or change existing ones, most of your work will be stored on the staging server, waiting for review, editing, approval and/or publishing to the live production server.

Staging Server vs. Production Server
What isthe difference between the staging server and the production server? The production server is simply the live SUNY Oswego Web site, and is hosted by the college's own servers. OmniUpdate, however, hosts the pages that are still in the publishing process, such as newly created pages, edited pages and pages that have been approved and are waiting to be published to the live site on the staging server.

A page can be saved and passed between a number of different users many times before being published to the production server and the SUNY Oswego site. Until the time an authorized user clicks the Publish button, however, the pages remain on the staging server and can still be changed, edited or deleted.
