Lee/Swetman for student recreation
CCIT presentation:
Cynthia Clabough presented a proposal “Creating a Common Place Where Minds
and Technologies Merge” for consideration as possible future use of Hewitt
Union. Key points: cooperative proposal among several departments, be in one
space together but maintain separate department identities, ability to offer
the region and community expertise in graphic design, HCI etc, media rich
performance space, with the exception of information science all are already on
west campus, there is nothing like this on a SUNY campus in western NY. Summary
of need and proposal: project based studio spaces, larger lecture spaces that
could be transformed into smaller spaces; more performance spaces and higher
quality audio and video.
Other uses of Hewitt:
Nancy Bellow updated the group on a possible inbound call center for
technology-based customer support. A business (one of the partners is an
alumnus) have proposed leasing part of the basement to house a 75 seat call
center. This would provide paid work experience for students, internships for
students and resume builders for students. In addition, this could also provide
a source of revenue that would support further renovations to Hewitt Union.
Research still needs to be completed on whether students would be interested in
these jobs and the impact on other student employment opportunities on
campus.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:30. Next meeting is November 8th in 118A Rich
Hall.
