Campus Concept Committee Meeting

March 6, 2008

Room 134 Campus Center

Attendees:  Tim Farnsworth, Michael Pawlyk, David Hill, Casey Raymond, Matt Spindler, Steve Shull, Julie Pretzat, Casey Walpole, Nancy Bellow, John Huonker, Susan Camp, John Kares Smith, Tim Braun, Cynthia Clabough, Arvind Diddi, Susan Coultrap-McQuin, Todd Graber, Rameen Mohammadi, Mike Flaherty

1.  Jerry DeSantis was unable to attend so there were no project updates.

2.  Some members of the campus community including emeriti faculty have expressed concern that the name Swetman was lost when the renovations were made to the building.   College Council is responsible for naming buildings.  A plaque or a garden has been suggested.  Susan Camp encouraged the group to consider if we want to offer our opinion and/or suggestion.

3.  Tom Simmonds sent an e-mail to Susan Camp suggesting the School of Education develop a formal project specific Mission Statement and for the Campus Concept Committee to review how that project will fit into the overall campus development concept.  The suggestion was made to consider this at the next meeting.

4.  School of Communication, Media and Arts:

The purpose of the discussion was to give the new school direction in their planning process based on the experiences of the sciences.  The mission/vision statements from the new school would be forwarded to the campus concept committee as they consider a mission/vision statement for the Hewitt Quad.  The representatives from Communication, Media and Arts indicated they have already begun the planning process.

            Some of the suggestions included:

 •  Select a faculty member to shepherd the project who can interface between the administration and the faculty.

•  This is a good time to think about program offerings

•  If there are conferences e.g. Project Kaleidoscope that can assist members make every effort to attend.

•  The work and timeline from the sciences was distributed.  The group was encouraged to “think buildingless”.
