Fulbright Student Mentoring

Fulbright U.S. Student Program - Campus Deadline: Sept. 24, 2012

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is supported by the U.S. Department of State and overseen by the Institute for International Education (http://us.fulbrightonline.org/home.html). The program provides grants for graduating seniors, graduate students, early-career professionals, teachers, creative & performing artists, and innovators. The program is designed to increase understanding between people of the U.S. and people of other countries through a variety of exchange programs.  SUNY Oswego students can be strong candidates for these awards.

  • See our list of previous recipients.

There are both Research/Study grants and English Teaching Assistantship grants. To be eligible for either, applicants must be U.S. citizens, hold at least a bachelor's degree but not yet a terminal degree, and in many cases (but not all) be proficient in the language of the country. Over 140 countries offer grants to students. Fulbright seeks students from public institutions as well as privates, from all parts of the country, and from diverse social, economic, and cultural backgrounds.

Applications for most of the grants are due in October for the following year. It is never too early to start planning, even if you are a few years before graduation. Undergraduates can begin seeking help from their mentors and building success through their participation in undergraduate research, community engagement, campus activities, and study abroad. Masters degree students could consider this grant either for completion of their program or as a transition to a Ph.D. program. Early career professionals and others should also review the federal website to explore opportunities (http://us.fulbrightonline.org/home.html).

Help for SUNY Oswego Students and Alumni in Preparing and Applying for a Fulbright

Many SUNY Oswego students can be great candidates for this award. We have a Fulbright U.S. Students Program committee ready to help guide interested graduates, masters students, and alumni seeking a grant in the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Students are encouraged to contact the director of the Institute for Global Engagement to begin a discussion about the process.
