The Lake-Effect Storm Prediction and Research Center (LESPaRC) at SUNY Oswego Lesparc

Scott Steiger talks to CNN about the unique lake-effect weather conditions at Oswego.

Mission and Purpose

LESPaRC increases student experiential learning on weather phenomena. Students gain experience predicting weather events through research, classroom exposure, and practice through weather forecasting for the community.

This program has increased SUNY Oswego's presence in the Central New York region, as we are  providing a very useful product by forecasting for the needs of specific organizations (e.g., school districts, golf courses, etc.).  The meteorology faculty and students (by their junior/senior years) have obtained the expertise needed to forecast the weather phenomena with skill and accuracy in the Central NY area (e.g., they observe, study, and forecast lake-effect snow during the SUNY Oswego local forecast contest throughout the winter).

Another mission of the LESPaRC at SUNY Oswego is to create and enhance the meteorology program's relationships with the National Weather Service offices in Buffalo and Binghamton, NY, and nearby meteorology schools (SUNY Brockport, Oneonta, Cornell, etc.).  We are already engaged in lake-effect storm research with many of these institutions and look forward to future collaborative efforts.
