Service Learning

We follow the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse's definition of service-learning which states, "Service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities."

Service learning is designed to illuminate and strengthen student learning.  It provides a distinctive learning environment that allows students to reflect and integrate their service activities, newly acquired skills, and knowledge of real world settings into their academics. Students are not credited for their service, but for the demonstrated learning that comes from it.

Service Learning is integrated into select courses in which every student participates in service learning. If you are interested in service learning but are not enrolled in a service learning course, you may take service learning, GST 302 on your own.
