Community Service and Service Learning

Students and others discuss the benefits of getting involved at Oswego.

SUNY Oswego students provided over 39,000 hours of service to the community last year. Many students are involved in student-led volunteer programs including Adopt-A-Grandparent, Mentor Oswego, Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, Alternative Break and Red Cross Club. We have a variety of resources to help you find a volunteer opportunity that fits you!

Our new Opportunities Database Laker Leads points you toward volunteer positions, full- and part-time jobs, internships, work study, online references and much more!

Join our Volunteer Listserv by sending an e-mail to service@oswego.edu to receive e-mails about volunteer opportunities, search our online volunteer placement database, check out the Volunteer Calendar for all upcoming volunteer events, or visit our office in 145 Campus Center and speak with our friendly staff. Take a look at the new Community Services Database and see what students are saying about their service experiences.

Interested in traveling and doing service? We offer a great way to do both. Through Alternative Breaks we provide students a way to visit U.S. and international communities while doing service in a variety of ways. We have limited space available on our remaining Alternative Spring Break trips. Check out the application below and see how you can get involved!

What if SUNY Oswego Alternative Breaks earned a penny every time you searched the Internet? Or how about if a percentage of every purchase you made online went to support our cause? This can happen through GoodSearch.com, a Yahoo-powered search engine that donates half its advertising revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. Use it just as you would any search engine, get quality search results from Yahoo, and watch the donations add up!

Just go to http://www.goodsearch.com and be sure to enter SUNY Oswego Alternative Breaks as the charity you want to support. And spread the word!

Check out Community Service in SUNY-Oswego's 2010 Annual Report! Watch as students and staff with the SUNY Oswego Center for Community Service and Service Learning talk about their volunteer experiences in communities near and far.
