America's Imperfect Presidential Election: What Next?
Despite participation by tens of millions of primary voters and approximately 120 million general election voters, there have been numerous criticisms of American presidential elections. This talk examines the major critiques in light of this year's presidential nomination and election contests. After analyzing how we got here, I will look at the strategies of this year's candidates and predictions by "experts." Finally, I will evaluate how well our complex system works.

Bruce Altschuler is Professor of Political Science at SUNY Oswego whose main area of expertise is the American presidency. He is the author or co-author of five books and sole author of twenty articles. His most recent book is Acting Presidents: 100 Years of Plays about the Presidency. His commentary has been featured on public and commercial radio stations in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Singapore. His awards include the 2007 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship, a SUNY Research Foundation Award for Excellence in Research and Scholarship, A Syracuse Press Club Award for Best Radio Public Affairs Program, a New York State Associated Press Award for Best Local Radio Documentary, and the City University of New York Alumni Association Achievement Award.
