Interested in an exciting summer opportunity for undergraduate students. The Urban Fellows Program" is designed for students attending Rochester area institutions and natives of Rochester attending college outside the region. This is a truly unique experience that allows students to Give Where They Live.
Over 80 students from 23 colleges have participated in the program during the past six years. Through the generous support of the Rochester Area Community Foundation, City of Rochester, Kauffman Foundation and others, we are able to support $2,000 stipends for up to 20 Fellows in the 2008 program.
The Urban Fellows Program emphasizes civic engagement, promotes learning about urban issues, and encourages a celebration and appreciation for cross-cultural issues and urban life. The components of the program include:
*Summer Fellowships - students will be placed in a four-day a week paid fellowship in agencies located in the city of Rochester. Fellowship placements will be in a variety of fields that include health care, education, public safety, women's issues, economic development, youth faith-based activity, and housing.
*Urban Issues Workshops - each week Fellows will attend a day long seminar designed to allow them to learn about history, politics, demographics, and the sociology of urban systems in the area. Seminars are led by University of Rochester faculty along with visiting lecturers. Each workshop day will have an experimental component that includes off-site visits, conversations with community leaders, and group discussions regarding the strengths and challenges facing the Rochester area.
*Community/Cultural Based Activities - students will be invited and encouraged to participate in cultural events and activities of the City, including neighborhood festivals, neighborhood association meetings, and other recreational and cultural events. Many of these gatherings will include weekend and evening participation.
*End of Summer Institute - students will develop a paper based on their research and experiences and present their work at the end of the summer symposia. All community and college participants are involved to this celebration.
*Students may apply using the online application, www.rochester.edu/college/rccl.
The application deadline is March 3, 2008 and students will be notified of their status by the end of March.
