SHADES OF CLAY: A MULTICULTURAL LOOK AT CONTEMPORARY CLAY

Shades of ClaySponsored by Auxiliary Services and Student Art Exhibition Committee/S.A.

The exhibition celebrates contemporary ceramic art by twenty artists. The styles and themes are individual to each artist, but share the common thread of ethnicity and directly reflect the cultures from which they are inspired – African-American, Afro-Cuban, Thai, Chinese, Moorish, Chicano, Latino, Native American, and Cuban. Exhibition curated by Paul Andrew Wandless and toured by Smith Kramer Fine Art Services, Kansas City, MO.

Well-known ceramist David MacDonald will present an overview of his artwork of which three pieces are featured in the Tyler exhibition, SHADES OF CLAY. Inspired by African art and culture, MacDonald produces art as a celebration of his African heritage. The public is encouraged to view the exhibition at Tyler Art Gallery prior to the artist's talk.

PRIDE & PERSEVERANCE: CIVIL RIGHTS PAINTINGS BY CHARLY PALMER

Through his paintings, Charly Palmer presents a visual portrayal of events that are part of African American history, in particular, the Civil Rights Movement. His work appears in many galleries throughout the States and in many personal collections. His paintings reflect one of the themes found in this year’s campus reading selection, Bombingham by Anthony Grooms. Palmer will give a gallery talk prior to the opening reception.
