From Eastman School of
Music
Founded in 1993,
the Eastman School of Music Gamelan Lila Muni (Heavenly Sound), directed by
Sylvia Alajaji, is a Balinese gamelan angklung orchestra. This kind of ensemble
is one of more than 25 distinct types found on the island of Bali. Once limited
to ritual functions, the angklung ensemble now performs music ranging from
traditional, ceremonial pieces to modern secular dances. Gamelan at Eastman, as
in Bali, is a communal effort. The ensemble includes Eastman students, faculty
and staff, as well as members of the Rochester community.
