One of the first musicals to contain a tragic plot, Carousel is considered by many to be among the finest stage musicals ever written. In 1870s New England carnival barker Billy Bigelow wins the heart of demure Julie Jordan. Down on their luck, the newly married couple discovers they are expecting their first child. Determined to provide for his family, Billy turns to crime. During a botched robbery attempt, the ill-fated lovers are parted by death. Now, 15 years later, Billy is sent down “from above” to atone for the mistakes of his life and help his only child as she struggles with her father’s legacy.
