The University

Zhejiang Gongshang University (ZJGSU), established in 1911, is a public university located in the northeastern region of Hangzhou. "Zhejiang" is the province in which ZJGSU is located and "Gongshang" is the combination of two Chinese words meaning "business and technology." ZJGSU has a student population of 21,000 and has two campuses. The Xiasha campus is located in the northeastern section of Hangzhou City, bordering the Qiantang River and the Jiao Gong Lu Campus (Old Campus) is located in the city centre of Hangzhou, about a ten-minute drive from the scenic and historic West Lake.

The Program

Students studying Chinese language will study on the Jiao Gong Lu Campus (Old Campus). Language courses include: Essential Chinese, Intermediate Chinese or Business Chinese. Students wishing to study other subjects, in English, will stay on the Xiasha campus. Depending on the number of exchange students from other countries, including the U.K., Thailand, Japan and South Korea, students may be able to take courses in Business and other fields on the Xiasha campus depending on availability.

Students have the opportunity to apply for and participate in the Spoken English Promotion Project (SEPP) as English teaching assistants at ZJGSU. Students who are accepted to participate in the Spoken English Promotion Project (SEPP) will chat with Chinese students at ZJGSU, in English, about topics of mutual interest. Students are expected to participate for four sessions/hours per weekday in the afternoon and/or evening during their stay in ZJGSU. In return Zhejiang Gongshang University (ZJGSU) will cover various expenses, including pick up upon arrival, Chinese culture and language/ business course, food, accommodation in a double room (includes air conditioning, bathroom, and internet access) and local tours in Hangzhou during weekends.

Housing and Meals

Students who take Chinese Language Courses will be housed at the International House on the Jiao Gong Lu Campus (Old Campus). The International House has about 40 apartments for international students. Each apartment has three bedrooms, one sitting room, one toilet and one bathroom. The apartments are equipped with hot-water supplies, telephones, TV sets, refrigerators, washing machines, air-conditioners and access to the Internet.

Students studying at the Xiasha Campus will stay at the Guest House on the Xiasha Campus. The Guest House provides double rooms for international exchange students taking courses in English (depending on availability) or English teaching assistants in the Spoken English Promotion Project (SEPP). The Guest House is equipped with hot water supplies, access to the Internet and TV sets.
