Paris at la Sorbonne
The University
la Sorbonne                    Eiffel Tower by day

La Sorbonne, which is one of the oldest universities in Europe, was founded in the 13th century. It served as the model for Oxford and Cambridge and other universities of northern Europe. In 1469 it was responsible for the introduction of printing into France.  The reputation of the Sorbonne as one of the world’s greatest seats of learning still attracts students from all over the globe.

The Program                                       The Seine

Established in 1969, Oswego's la Sorbonne program is the oldest undergraduate overseas French program in the SUNY system. The program provides an enriching academic experience through exposure to noted French professors and the vast cultural resources of Paris. Students follow a curriculum at the Sorbonne (Cours de Civilisation Française) based on their preparation in French, interests, and the results of evaluation tests that are given ten days after their arrival in Paris. All classes are taught in French, yet are intended specifically for international students.

Admission Requirements:

Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, and typically will have completed at least one year of French. Acceptance is based on the student’s academic standing, recommendations, and personal study statement.

NOTE: Students at the beginning level of French may apply and will be considered for the introductory French course of study at the Sorbonne.

Program Dates
  • Fall - late September to mid-January (early return is possible)
  • Spring - late January to late May
The Program Director

Celine Garelli, Oswego's Paris director since 1994.

The Paris program is supervised by Madame Celine Garelli, our director in Paris.  The director assigns housing, assists students in selecting courses, evaluates grades and credits, and organizes the orientation program and cultural activities/excursions in Paris. She has directed the Oswego Paris program since 1994.

Housing & Meals                                                  Inside la Foyer Vigie

Students have three housing options: independent housing, international residence halls (foyers), or host family housing.  Each housing option has its own meal plan.

Orientation and Excursions

There is a mandatory ten day orientation session in Paris to start the semester.  Students have intensive French language review and are given a thorough introduction to life in Paris. Course advising and housing placement advising are also part of this orientation program.

Typically, the program director arranges visits to the opera, museums, and more in Paris, and at least one excursion outside of Paris, such as Mont Saint Michel in Normandy, or the castles of the Loire Valley.  These cultural activities and excursions are offered to all participants at a reduced cost.
