The Republic of Ireland occupies the island of Ireland, except for six northern counties which compose Northern Ireland (Ulster), a part of the United Kingdom. Although Ireland has been historically one of Europe's poorest countries, since becoming a member of the European Union in 1973, it has begun to experience rapid economic growth and has attracted some of Europe's most dynamic companies, especially in telecommunications.
University College is located in the city of Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland. A city of about one million inhabitants, more than half of whom are under the age of 25, Dublin has been changing in recent years from a city steeped in tradition to a modern, dynamic cosmopolitan center.
