The Republic of Cuba occupies the largest island of the West Indies. It is situated west of the island of Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic) and is 90 miles south of Key West, Florida. The island is mountainous in the southeast and south-central areas (Sierra Maestra) and flat or rolling elsewhere. Cuba’s capital and largest city is La Habana with an estimated population of more than two million. Cuban society today is a mixture of Spanish, Taino, and African peoples and cultures.
