The People’s Republic of China (PRC) is the largest country in East Asia. With more than 1.32 billion people its population is the largest in the world. Although the PRC has been under the control of the Communist Party of China (CPC) since 1949, market-oriented reforms since 1978 have generated extremely rapid economic growth (about 9 percent per annum since 1979). China now plays a major role in the global economy. It is the world’s biggest user of steel and concrete and is the world’s third largest importer and second largest exporter. Due to its large geographical size, huge population, and rapidly growing economy, China is an emerging superpower.
