Brazil is the largest country in Latin America in terms of square miles, occupying almost one-half of the continent, and in terms of population, having nearly 200 million inhabitants. Its largest city, São Paulo, is the second largest city in the Western Hemisphere. Brazil’s large size provides a great deal of environmental, cultural, and racial variation.
The Portuguese explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral arrived in 1500. The country was colonized by the Portuguese who intermingled with the indigenous Amerindians and Africans brought to work on sugar plantations producing a mixed race population. Despite this intermixing and the addition of other peoples in more recent times, especially from Germany, Italy, and Japan, the Portuguese influence in Brazil remains strong; Portuguese is the national language and Roman Catholicism is the religion of the vast majority of the population.
