The University
The University of Barcelona (UB) was founded in 1450. Today, the university has four campuses, in different parts of the city. The University of Barcelona is the oldest and largest of the six universities in Barcelona, and of the ten in Catalunya. It has 74,000 students - more than half of the total student population in Catalunya - and is the second largest in terms of student numbers in Spain.
The Program
This four-week program is held at the Curso de Estudios Hispanicos of the University of Barcelona. Students will enroll for six credits during the summer program, following the curriculum of the Curso de Estudios Hispanicos at the University of Barcelona. Students will take six credits, three credits of language and three credits of Spanish culture. Language courses are offered from beginning to advanced levels. Courses meet four hours per day, five days per week, for four weeks. A placement test is administered during orientation to determine each student's language level.
The Program Dates
- Summer - late June to late July
Program Directors

The SUNY-Oswego/University of Barcelona program is supervised by a resident director and assistant director. The director assists students in selecting courses and evaluates grades and credits. A final selection of courses is done in Barcelona, where the director reviews the student’s transcript, placement examination, and degree/career needs, and holds an individual consultation with each program participant. The assistant director assigns student housing, organizes orientation, and advises students on practical matters.
Housing and Meals
Students have two housing options: living with a family or finding their own, independent housing. Students who select the homestay option will live with a Spanish-speaking Catalan family familiar and comfortable with hosting American students. Students in the homestay program are provided with a breakfast, a bagged lunch and an evening meal.
Some students prefer to live independently while studying in Barcelona. Such students are responsible for finding and arranging their own housing. Program costs are reduced accordingly.
