The University
The University of Barcelona (UB) was founded in 1450. Today, the university has four campuses, in different parts of the city. The University of Barcelona is the oldest and largest of the six universities in Barcelona, and of the ten in Catalunya. It has 74,000 students - more than half of the total student population in Catalunya - and is the second largest in terms of student numbers in Spain.
The Program
The SUNY-Oswego/University of Barcelona program follows the curriculum of the Curso de Estudios Hispánicos at the University of Barcelona. Students enroll in a six-credit course of Spanish language and grammar on the basis of their preparation in Spanish, which is determined by evaluation tests that are given just after the students’ arrival in Barcelona. All classes are taught in Spanish by distinguished faculty members from the University of Barcelona, yet are intended specifically for non-natives.
The Program Dates
- Fall - September to mid December
- Spring - January to mid May
The Overseas Directors

The SUNY-Oswego/University of Barcelona program is supervised by a resident director and assistant director. The director assists students in selecting courses and evaluates grades and credits. A final selection of courses is done in Barcelona, where the director reviews the student’s transcript, placement examination, and degree/career needs, and holds an individual consultation with each program participant. The assistant director assigns student housing and organizes an orientation program in Barcelona, including excursions in and outside the city.
Housing and Meals
Students have two housing options: living with a family or finding their own, independent housing. Students who select the homestay option will live with a Spanish-speaking Catalan family familiar and comfortable with hosting American students. Students in the homestay program are provided with a breakfast, a bag lunch and an evening meal everyday.
Some students prefer to live independently while studying in Barcelona. Such students are responsible for finding and arranging their own housing. Program costs are reduced accordingly.
