Master of Science, Major in Chemistry

General Information

The program is based on the conviction that the needs of students are best met in a program where much individual attention is possible. The course training is equivalent to the standards set for the Ph.D., regardless of whether the M.S. is to be terminal or preparatory to the Ph.D. The Chemistry Department at Oswego was the first State University College in New York to be accredited by the American Chemical Society.

Admission

The applicant should have the equivalent of an undergraduate major in Chemistry and baccalaureate from an accredited school. International students must submit TOEFL and GRE scores.

The applicant's admittance for graduate work on the basis of the applicant's transcript and two recent letters of recommendation is determined by the graduate committee of the Chemistry Department, and approval of the Graduate Office.

Program Notes

1. Elective courses may be taken in departments other than Chemistry. All elective courses must be selected, under advisement.

2. In the thesis option all students are required to take a minimum of six accumulated semester hours of Chemistry 598, Thesis. A maximum of twelve semester hours of thesis may be taken if approved by the Departmental Graduate Advisory Committee. The thesis involves an original research problem and a formal dissertation. Students are required to give an oral presentation of their work.

3. All students are required to take one semester hour of seminar.

4. A reading knowledge of German, Russian or a computer language is desired before entrance to the program and must be demonstrated before completion. The language required is determined by its appropriateness, under advisement, to the selected field of research.

5. After completing fifteen semester hours, the student is evaluated by the department with respect to recommendation for degree candidacy provided the student has demonstrated competency in four areas of chemistry.

6. All students are required to pass qualifying examinations in four out of five main areas of chemistry, which include Analytical, Biochemistry, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical.
