Graduate Council Meeting Minutes
September 22, 2006

Attendance: S. Camp, K. King, G. Klatsky, C. Mack, J. Mullen, B. Silky, R. Skolnik, J. Smith, D. Vanouse.

 

  1. Election of Chair:  Don Vanouse was nominated for Chair.  He was unanimously elected.
  2. Minutes of May 5, 2006:  The minutes were reviewed and accepted as submitted.
  3. Report of the Dean of Graduate Studies:  D. King noted the following issues that are currently taking place in respect to Graduate Studies:
    • Discussions on a metro-center are still in progress.  It is planned that this facility will serve space needs created by new programs, certificate and contract offerings;
    • Talks are continuing with the Sloan Foundation about the possibility of developing a Professional Science Masters on a SUNY campus;
    • Progress is being made offering the needed content courses for the MSED Curriculum and Instruction.  The deans, as well as faculty have been brainstorming strategies for offering these courses that are usually low enrollment.
    • New guidelines for Graduate Assistantships is currently being drafted.  The guidelines will define three types of assistantships: Graduate Assistant (as we know the position now), research assistantship, and teaching assistantship.
    • The view books for most graduate programs are complete.  They, along with the View Book, developed last fall, will be used at regional and local Graduate Fairs.  The next project to improve SUNY Graduate Studies is to update, improve, develop more consistency, and/or develop graduate websites for the various graduate programs.  Currently there is a wide range among the various SUNY Oswego programs – from nothing available to a very sophisticated; and
    • An outside review team for the MAT English is scheduled to come to campus early in November.
  4. Meeting Schedule for Fall 2006 semester: October 6 and 20; November 3 and 17, and December 1.  All meetings will begin at 8:00 in the English Meeting Room in Poucher.
  5. BA Psychology/MBA program:  Richard Skolnik and Gary Klatsky presented the program.  Questions about need for the degree, numbers of students, number of semester hours, and admissions were answered.  A few typing errors were noted.  The program was approved with the correction of  a few typing errors.
  6. MAT in Mathematics 7-12:  Joyce Smith presented this collaborative program between the Mathematics Department and Curriculum and Instruction.  Following a brief discussion, the program was approved.
  7. Graduate Website:  David King presented the proposed outline (prepared by Kevi McNeilly) carefully and thoughtfully.  All Council members agreed that this was an appropriate route to follow.
