Graduate Council Meeting Minutes
May 5, 2006

Attendance: Abraham, Baltus (guest), Basualdo, Bisbee, Klatsky, King, Pan, Perdiquera, Smith, Waterman (guest), Vanouse.

 

  1. Approval of Minutes of April 21, 2006.  The minutes were approved as written.
  2. Changes in Counseling and Psychological Services programs.
    • CAS in Counseling.  B. Waterman presented the changes and rationale.  These additional options in final culminating activities will make the programs more relevant for individual students.  Smith moved approval; Klatsky seconded.  The motion was passed after a brief discussion.
    • CAS in Psychology.  B. Waterman presented the rationale. Basically the same as for the CAS in Counseling.  Smith moved approval; Klatsky seconded.  The motion was passed.

    3. Math Courses.  C. Baltus presented the following Math course for approval. 

        These courses will serve as the required courses in the proposed MAT Adolescence 7-12 program.

    • MAE Course Designation.  Courses with this designation will address the specific subject and the related pedagogy.  The courses will serve students in both the proposed MAT program and the MSED Curriculum and Instruction Program.  Bisbee moved approval; Klatsky seconded.  After a brief discussion, the motion was approved.
    • MAE 514 Mathematics for all Learners in a Diverse Society.  This course was developed as a result of the SED outside review of the proposed MAT program.  Reviewers indicated that the program should be shortened.  In a effort to do this, the Math Department and Curriculum and Instruction agreed to work cooperatively to combine a math course with a course concerned with diverse issues in the classroom.  Klatsky moved approval; Smith seconded.  The course was approved.
    • MAT 550 Statistics and Classroom Research.  This course was revised to include material relevant to classrooms and current needs of mathematics teachers grade 7-12.  Smith moved approval; Klatsky seconded.  The course was approved as revised.
    • MAT 573 Number Theory through Problems.  This course was revised to include relevant material and references for classroom teachers, grade 7-12.  Klatsky moved approval; Bisbee seconded.  The revisions were approved.
    • MAT 509 Issues in Teaching Mathematics.  This is a new course designed to accompany student teaching.  Students will participate in this course only while student teaching.  Discussions about the student teachers experience will be the primary topics.  SED requires a seminar course such as this to occur during the student teaching semester.  Klatsky moved approval; Smith seconded.  The course was approved.

    4. Graduate Dean’s Report.

    • There are some copies in draft format of some of the program brochures completed.  D. King will be meeting with the students to discuss edits.
    • Graduate School Week (Oct. 30- Nov. 3) will offer opportunities for undergraduate students to find out about graduate school possibilities and how and when to apply.
    • Besides the program brochures, other print and media spots are being developed.
    • The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and various departments are working on ways to provide the content courses needed for the MSEd Curriculum and Instruction Program.
    • Discussions are continuing with the Sloane Foundation about the PSM program possibilities.

    5. Council Chair’s Report .  Vanouse brought the document “Thinking about Programs for 2011 and Beyond: A Request for Brainstorming by mid-May”.  He suggested that ideas should be sent to the appropriate dean.

    6. LIT 515 Teaching Young Adult Literature.  Smith presented the outline and provided a rationale.  Abraham moved to approve; Klatsky seconded.  After a brief discussion, the course was approved.

    7. BA (Psychology) MBA Program.  Since no one was in attendance to present this proposal, it was tabled until a later meeting.
